Because if you refuse to help the mage and just report back to the elder the quest is marked complete but you are locked out of all other quests. No demon, no ghost in chest, no werewolf. Just . . . nothing.
Perhaps in the real world someone will notice that you’ve not logged into WE for a long time?

What I mean is that it’s part of the story. Think of it like Act 2 in The Witcher 3 — you can’t move on to Act 3 until you’ve completed Act 2.
It’s the same here. The player has to go through the transformation because it’s an essential part of the story.

Then you might consider eliminating the ability to finish the quest without transformation. If you say “I’ll be going now”, sleep and talk to village elder the quest is complete without transformation.
